Clearer council communications study
A study into public perceptions of services delivered
by local councils, including online services
Local councils are investing millions across the UK to improve
basic public services and amenities and to increase their
accessibility to local residents. Councils hold responsibility for
a range of public services from street cleaning to social services
and cultural events.
In the past few years there has also been a rapid explosion of
new services being brought online by local councils in an effort to
support their local communities with key public services. But
is this essential role that local councils are playing in the UK
being successfully communicated to the British public; and does the
public really feel that they are getting value for money for their
council tax contributions? We also examine information flow between
local councils and their citizens and how this fits with the
public's preferred method of communication with their local
authority.
Our aims
The aim of the survey from ntl:Telewest Business' perspective
was to understand:
- The British public's overall level of awareness of local
council services and their local councilor
- How local council services are rated by the communities that
they serve
- What the public's current reaction is to council tax
contributions and the implications of this for future possible tax
rises
- How local councils use different forms of communication to
connect with the public
- How web-based communication has impacted the public's use of
public services.
