Press release

UK’s largest newspaper publisher Trinity Mirror uses ntl:Telewest Business network to help deliver news across the UK

  • Media group adopts advanced IP communications network to support smooth running of daily operations
  • Resilient network connects 170 UK sites with full back-up
  • ntl:Telewest Business chosen for consultative approach, and provision of tailored network and services

25 June 2007. ntl:Telewest Business, part of the Virgin Media Group, is helping Trinity Mirror plc to deliver its news to 20 million readers each week and ensure its daily operations and production run like clockwork.

Operating 240 local newspapers and five national newspapers across the UK, Trinity Mirror required a single network that offered increased robustness and simpler management. The Internet Protocol Virtual Private Network (IPVPN) provided over ntl:Telewest Business’ nation-wide network supplies Trinity Mirror with greater resilience and streamlines the way the company manages information back across its 170 different sites. The technology means that if a network link goes down the organisation can now maintain production by replicating data services across multiple data centres, ensuring the news gets delivered on time. The investment is part of an ongoing initiative to ensure 24/7 production capabilities at Trinity Mirror and a national back-up network.

Trinity Mirror is also evaluating how the network - which carries voice, video and data traffic - can be used in future to roll out new communications services. The company is already using the network for its IP CCTV and access card security system, which enables it to operate as a centrally managed service.

“We have to ensure that current news and information is always available to our millions of readers, be it on-line or in printed media. That’s why we needed a reliable network that spanned the UK,” said Ian Bailey, Group Networks Services Manager, for Trinity Mirror. “Having worked with ntl:Telewest Business for more than a decade it was an easy choice on who we wanted to work with on this project. We knew that the company would put our needs first and develop a highly bespoke network that would help us deliver the news wherever and whenever we wanted.”

“Competition in the media sector has always been fierce, and that’s why organisations need a network that is totally dependable to transfer data and information as and when is required. We have spent £13 billion pounds building such a network, which can offer next-generation capabilities to any business across the UK,” said John Cunningham, director of business markets, ntl:Telewest Business.
