South Nottingham College connects staff and students
with high speed network and IPT
- IPT reduces voice communication costs by 70 per cent
- High speed network brings College into 21st
Century
ntl:Telewest Business, the supplier of
communications services to the public and private sectors, and
South Nottingham College have joined forces to connect staff and
students across two sites with a high speed network and
state-of-the-art IP telephony (IPT). This will deliver a better and
more efficient learning environment for the College’s students and
staff.
South Nottingham College, which offers,
educational opportunities to post 14 learners from across the
Nottingham conurbation and the borough of Rushcliffe has five
centres: the West Bridgford Centre, which accommodates the majority
of course areas, the Charnwood Centre and four smaller training
centres across the area. Every year, approximately 19,000
individuals benefit from South Nottingham College’s welcoming
learning environment and the expertise of more than 500 staff, and
the College has committed significant investment in improving
facilities for both staff and students.
With such a large number of staff, the College
decided to replace its dated voice system in order to reduce the
cost of having multiple phone lines across the College’s sites and
gain the flexibility needed to accommodate future growth. As
the Charnwood Centre has been ranked one of the top five centres
nationally for Art and Design, Multimedia, Photography and Print
education, the College also felt there was a need to replace the
legacy analogue network so that students and staff can benefit from
secure broadband access, fast and efficient access to information
and the ability to transfer large voice, video and data files.
Due to its competitive pricing and the team’s
high standard of technical knowledge and support, South Nottingham
College turned to ntl:Telewest Busness and the company rolled out a
high-speed 100mb Ethernet network, connecting the West Bridgford
Centre and the Charnwood Centre, and an IPT solution that enabled
free calls across sites, resilience and scalability. The new
automated call centre capability also ensures that any incoming
calls to South Nottingham College are dealt with efficiently and
effectively.
“With award-winning Art & Design and
Multimedia Departments, we felt that it was time to bring our
network into the 21st Century so that it could support
both our staff and students,” said Keith Baker, Estates and
Facilities Manager, South Nottingham College. “With such a large
number of staff using the phones in their offices, teaching rooms
and IT rooms on a day-to-day basis, we also needed a voice
communications system that was reliable, user-friendly and cost
efficient. The ntl:Telewest Business team offered us superb
support from start to finish and since installing IPT we have seen
a 70 per cent reduction in voice communication costs,” he
added.
“South Nottingham College is a shining example
of how employing the latest communications technology can result in
significant cost savings and benefits for both staff and students,”
said Christopher Small, Director for Public Sector, ntl:Telewest
Business. “The College now has an innovative telephony system that
will grow with the College’s requirements and an up-to-date network
that helps enable students to achieve their academic goals.”
Looking ahead, the three South Nottingham
College IT training centres will be connected to the Ethernet
network and major educational organisations are starting to examine
how the technology can be deployed at other academic
institutes.
ntl:Telewest Business is at the forefront of
helping further and higher education institutions reap the benefits
of resilient and high performance networks to facilitate web-based
learning, quick and easy access to student and examination records,
collaborative working on joint research projects and greater access
for increasing numbers of remote or part time students.
