UCE Birmingham invests in CCTV communication network to improve
student safety
- ntl:Telewest Business network gives centralised control over
student safety across multiple sites
26th June 2006. To ensure the safety of its 25,000 students, UCE
Birmingham has invested in a high speed CCTV communication network
from ntl:Telewest Business. The move has ensured that the
university is able to put in place a centralised security policy
for fighting crime across its multiple sites in Birmingham. Through
a student satisfaction survey, students at UCE Birmingham have
already reported a downturn in crime since the early phases of the
new CCTV services went live.
Multiple camera installations in more than 12 of the
university’s campus sites have been connected to a centralised
control room using single-mode fibre from ntl:Telewest Business.
The control room is manned around the clock and supports advanced
capabilities including, fire alarm activation, intruder alarms,
panic alarms and access to sites via intercom remotely.
“UCE Birmingham is sprawled across the city including highly
dense inner city urban areas.”, explains Andrew Markou, security
manager at UCE Birmingham. “This poses a great challenge to
security. Previously security issues were dealt with locally and we
were unable to put in place a common strategy or policies for
ensuring a secure student environment. The CCTV services from
ntl:Telewest Business were the most cost effective in order to
introduce a central policy. They also provide unparalleled local
support and the flexibility for us to add further sites as the
university grows.”
The high speed fibre optic links will guarantee a clear picture
and a robust CCTV transmission service to aid local police when
making identifications and when responding to security alerts. In
addition, the CCTV services from ntl:Telewest Business will ensure
that UCE Birmingham is compliant with the Data Protection Act, by
preventing sites from viewing data individually and ensuring that
monitors cannot be viewed by the public.
“CCTV monitoring is now widely acknowledged as effective in the
fight against crime.”, said Christopher Small, Director of Public
Sector at ntl:Telewest Business. “Our team is experienced in
working with organisations that face the challenge of tackling
public security issues in distributed urban areas. This includes
local councils, health authorities and local education authorities.
ntl:Telewest Business has been able to apply this expertise to
building a reliable surveillance solution for UCE Birmingham.”
The ntl:Telewest Business CCTV service is highly flexible
allowing UCE Birmingham to scale the number of camera links and
options to meet demand. The university’ has planned a £23m
refurbishment 11 miles from the main campus. This will be included
in the next phase of extending the university’s CCTV communication
network.
