Onyx eliminates waste with IPVPN from Telewest Business

March 7th 2005. Onyx, one of the UK’s leading waste management companies, has selected Telewest Business to provide a managed IP Virtual Private Network (IPVPN) in 2005. Onyx is expected to make considerable savings by switching from Frame Relay to a more flexible IPVPN.

The four-year deal will connect 79 company sites, allowing Onyx to meet the traffic demands placed on it by its 5,500 UK staff. More than 80 circuits will be installed throughout the network, utilising fixed link and DSL technology, allowing Onyx to manage its network infrastructure and costs more effectively.

Onyx’s decision to move from Frame Relay infrastructure to IPVPN was driven by an increasing need for a flexible network that can support its evolving business and provide more efficient use of bandwidth through the prioritisation of traffic, not available over their Frame Relay infrastructure.

Telewest Business, a leading supplier of voice, data and Internet solutions to the private and public sectors, has one of the UK’s largest broadband local loops and national network infrastructures.

As a part of the project, Telewest Business will deliver a 100Mbps fibre connection into Onyx’s data centre at Brownhills, initially rate limited to 14Mbps. Thanks to the flexibility of Telewest Business’ offer, Onyx will be able to turn bandwidth on and off as required, with the company being charged only for the agreed usage, providing Onyx full network flexibility to respond to their business growth demands.

Mark Langford, Information Systems Director, Onyx, said: “IT upgrades are always a costly affair, but Telewest Business offered value for money without compromising on quality. We felt that Telewest Business took time to understand our business requirements, and only when fully aware, offered the right solution to suit our needs.”

“Flexibility is the one of the primary factors driving IPVPN adoption with our customers,” said Meyrick Vevers, Commercial Director at Telewest Business. “With Onyx, we were able to upgrade its network, provide increased scalability, make it future-proof, and give the company complete control over how it utilises its bandwidth.”

The deployment will also incorporate a disaster recovery programme. Telewest will novate Onyx’s existing 100Mbps LAN extension between its Brownhills and Four Ashes sites and supply diverse links to business critical sites and ISDN2 back-up where appropriate. In the future, Onyx will be able to reap further benefits from its network infrastructure by switching from its traditional PBX telephony to Voice over IP (VoIP).
